Academic and sporting achievements marked at Avondale Community College awards ceremony


Representatives from the school’s Board of Management were in attendance, including Chairperson Jimmy O’Shaughnessy and members Audrey Byrne, David O’Gorman and Joe Henkel. Rachel Gahan and Daphne Cullen represented the Parents Council at the ceremony.

Congratulations to First Year Eliane Hardel, Second Year Alannah Doyle, Third Year Aimee Fox, Transition Year student Rhys Byrne, Fifth Year student Kiera Byrne and Sixth Year Aoife Healy on receiving their Student of the Year Awards. Aoife’s Bank of Ireland Award recognised her outstanding academic achievements which included the year’s highest mock results. Tom Byrne was winner of The Ethos Award acknowledging his positive contribution to our school community and his commitment to practicing the ethos of the school. Aisling Byrne also received the KWETB Ethos Award Trophy at the ceremony.

Our wealth of sporting talent was also celebrated through a variety of awards. Mr Canosa presented Ross Keenan with the U15 Soccer Player of the Year Award and Sonny McHale with the U17 award. Eoghan Doyle was the recipient of the Hurling Player of the Year, Eabha O’Connor, Ella Breen and Helen Winterbotham won Athletes of the Year, while Sixth Year students Gavin Cullen and Alannah Dixon both received awards for their contribution to sport in the school. Aodh Kennedy, Ruairi Fleming, Thomas Nolan, Alanna McCoy, DJ Williams, Sean Byrne, Jake Byrne, Lucy Byrne, Jack Power, Alex Kavanagh and Paddy Harper were all acknowledged for their football talents.

Camogie awards went to Leah Keogh, Aimee Fox, Claire Fleming and Ava Breen. Basketball stars Eoghan Doyle, Lily Stapleton, Shane Kennedy, Emma Murphy, Jack Windsor, Fabiola, Iria, Grace Henkel and Ethan Doyle, each received Players of the Year Awards. Finally, Grace Henkel and Alex Kavanagh were jointly awarded with the Dowling Cup Sports Stars of the Year 2024.

Students who have excelled in various fields of sport outside of the school were also honoured. Maria Zakharenko was noted for her athletics, as was Alannah Dixon for her rugby talents and Bea Clancy for her soccer skills.

The school also has a number of students who play for the minor county teams in football, hurling and camogie, including Niamh Whelan, Claire Fleming, Rebecca Murphy, Kayle Sheane Ni Eigeartaigh, Iona McKenna, Emily Fleming, Joe Jacob, Alex Kavanagh and Keith Lawless.

Conor Byrne has been representing Ireland as part of its Tug of War team for many years, Caoimhe Nolan has excelled at gymnastics as has Emma Olohan, Roisin Battersby, Sarah Jane McDonnell, Maria McDonnell, Rebecca Cahill and Calandra Kelly at dancing.

Finally, awards were presented to students for their outstanding contribution to Dramatic Arts and Music in the school, the Enterprise Club, Lego club, debating, paired reading, the Student Council, poetry and wellbeing committees, with mentors and senior prefects also acknowledged. The students who had competed in The Young Scientist competition and Junk Kouture were also recognised.
