The U.S. Helsinki Commission hosted a briefing on preserving Ukrainian culture amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The panelists were Peter Doroshenko, director of the The Ukrainian Museum in New York City; Leva Gudaitytė, a doctoral research fellow in the musicology department at the University of Oslo; and Richard Kurin, distinguished scholar and ambassador-at-large at the Smithsonian Institution. They discussed the importance of protecting Ukraine’s eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, religious structures, buildings of historical and artistic significance, museums, monuments, and memorials. At the time of this event, the Smithsonian identified more than 2,100 cases of potential damage and destruction to Ukraine’s cultural sites because of Russia’s invasion. close
