Celebrating Academic Excellence: The Citizen-Scholar Awards


KHON2 will be airing the HLTA Citizen-Scholar Awards Thursday, May 23rd, from 9:30 to 10:00 PM celebrating its 20th anniversary, honors 42 outstanding students from Hawai‘i’s public school system with $1,000 scholarships each. Four county winners will receive an additional $2,500, and two top students will be awarded an extra $5,000 each.

Living808 invited President and CEO of the Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association, Mufi Hannemann, along with Kalaheo Senior and Citizen-Scholar Ahryanna McGuirk on the show to talk about the award and ceremony.


The awards are a collaborative effort by the Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association (HLTA), the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, and the Hawai‘i State Department of Education. This year, Southwest Airlines has generously gifted all Citizen-Scholars roundtrip tickets, enhancing the milestone celebration.

HLTA President and CEO Mufi Hannemann sat down with John Veneri and highlighted the significance of these awards. “This collaboration rewards students for their academic achievements and community service, encouraging them to pursue higher education and contribute to society.”

One of this year’s Citizen-Scholars, Ahryanna McGuirk from Kalaheo High School, shares her accomplishments and what the award means to her. Ahryanna has received the Jefferson Scholarship to the University of Virginia, represented Hawai‘i in the United States Youth Program, and was recently selected as a U.S. Presidential Scholar.
