Four faculty recognized with awards for excellence in Honors teaching, mentoring

Two members of the University of Delaware faculty have been recognized for outstanding work in teaching and two for excellence in mentoring. These awards are meant to recognize the amazing contributions UD faculty make to the teaching and mentoring of Honors students. According to current Dean Michael Chajes, “These awards have been established to highlight the efforts of the UD faculty who make Honors what it is today – a community of great teachers and gifted mentors who challenge our young scholars to be the very best they can be.”

 

Selected by an Honors committee made up of students, faculty, and staff, the teaching and mentoring awards are based solely on nominations from Honors students.

 

The Excellence in Honors Teaching Award winners for 2022 are:

  • Jane Case Lilly, Assistant Professor in the Biden School of Public Policy & Administration
  • Leslie Reidel, Professor of Theatre

 

The Excellence in Honors Mentoring Award winners for 2022 are:

  • Jessica Tanis, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences
  • Don Watson, Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry

 

Excellence in Honors Teaching

In nominating Professor Case Lilly, a student said:

“Rather than teach us what leadership is, Dr. Case Lilly taught us how to be leaders.”

In nominating Professor Riedel, a student said:

“The first day of classes my freshman year, the first professor I got the pleasure to meet was Leslie Reidel. As a marketing major, I really didn’t see why it was necessary for me to be taking a theater class, but wow am I elated that I had the opportunity to have such an amazing professor.”

 

Excellence in Honors Mentoring

In nominating Professor Tanis, a student said:

“She encourages all of her students to think critically and deeply about their research projects, which fosters individuality and ownership over personal research.”

In nominating Professor Watson, a student said:

“Professor Watson gave me the support and encouragement I needed to grow into a researcher and a scientist — an equal.”
