Countdown to Rio 2016: Russia escapes total ban

RUSSIA ESCAPES IOC BLANKET BAN

Russia will not receive a blanket ban from Rio 2016 following the country’s doping scandal.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will leave it up to individual sports’ governing bodies to decide if Russian competitors are clean and should be allowed to take part.

The IOC also decided that whistleblower Yuliya Stepanova would not be allowed to compete in Rio.

The World Anti-Doping Agency, along with many current and former athletes, have expressed dismay at the IOC decision to allow Russia to compete.

BOLT DISPELS INJURY WORRIES

Athletics: Usain Bolt allayed his Rio 2016 fitness fears with victory at the Anniversary Games.

Six-time Olympic champion Bolt needed a medical exemption to be picked for the Rio Games after suffering a grade one hamstring tear, external at the Jamaican trials earlier this month.

However, he proved he is fit again – if not quite back to his best just yet – in clocking 19.89 seconds to win the 200m on Friday night.

Elsewhere at the Anniversary Games, America’s Keni Harrison broke the 28-year-old 100m hurdles record, setting a new best of 12.20 seconds. Jessica Ennis-Hill ran her second fastest hurdles time ever but insisted she is not the favourite for heptathlon gold in Rio.

Laura Muir broke Kelly Holmes’ 1500m British record to strengthen her Olympic medal credentials while Britain’s men’s and women’s 4x100m relay teams caught the eye with world-leading times, and Mo Farah won the 5,000m in comfortable fashion.
