DC vows support YMCR to protect environment


ITANAGAR, June 17: The Youth Mission for Clean River (YMCR) members led by chairman S.D Loda called on Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) DC Shweta Nagarkoti Mehta in her office here on Monday and discussed collaborative efforts on environmental protection and town beautification.

The discussions focused on maintaining the ICR’s cleanliness, particularly river conservation and rejuvenation for which the YMCR gave a proposal on waste management and town beautification through PowerPoint. It also raised concerns about unregulated dumping of medical waste by a private laboratory in Bank Tinali and expressed concern against such practice, which violated environmental regulations while posing health risks to the people and the environment.

They drew her attention to unauthorized slaughterhouses dumping waste directly into rivers and streams threatening health of waterways and aquatic life.

Pointing out that “‘We’re Riverlutionaries”, the YMCA insignia signifies its dedication to revolutionizing river conservation efforts in the state, they told the DC after she unveiled the insignia and calendar.

Applauding the NGO’s work, she vowed her full support for the cause of environment and. assured logistical and other support, the YMCA claimed in a release.

On various concerns of the NGO, she promised immediate steps to regulate waste disposal practices. Stressing importance of community involvement, she advocated involving school students in river clean-up drives to cultivate environmental consciousness. “Children can play a vital role in promoting environmental cleanliness,” she said.

A resolution was adopted to conduct a large-scale and community-driven river clean-up event at Abo Tani Colony, near Waii Apartment, on July 6 next, the release added.
