From Compassion to Community: Dr. Shari Wright Harley’s Mission to Uplift the Forgotten

From humble beginnings in Orangeburg, South Carolina, to establishing vital resources for underserved communities, Dr. Shari Wright Harley has dedicated her life to helping others find stability, dignity, and hope. Her journey is one of resilience, compassion, and an unshakable belief that every individual deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.

Raised by her grandparents and deeply influenced by her Southern upbringing, Dr. Wright Harley’s early involvement in student council and ROTC laid the groundwork for a lifetime of service. Her experience at South Carolina State University, where she studied marketing and served in programs that supported underprivileged children, ignited a passion for advocacy that would follow her for decades.

One defining moment came when Dr. Wright Harley learned that adolescent girls in the foster care system were sleeping on office floors due to a lack of placements. Unwilling to let these young women fall through the cracks, she opened a therapeutic group home to provide them with the care and stability they desperately needed. This initiative exemplifies the spirit behind her Honors of Distinction recognition—a relentless drive to serve the overlooked and underserved.

Reflecting on her work, Dr. Wright Harley shares, “I hope my story inspires others to act with courage and heart. Change starts when we step outside our comfort zones and meet people where they are.” This mantra has guided her through each new endeavor, including the founding of Connecting Thru Housing, a nonprofit offering crisis support and housing advocacy.

Dr. Wright Harley’s efforts extend beyond her professional pursuits. As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, she continues to give back through volunteer work in shelters and community organizations. Her unwavering belief in the power of service has transformed lives—and communities—one act of kindness at a time.
