HUNTSVILLE — Six Bearkat bowlers have been named National Tenpin Coaches Association All-Academic Scholar Athletes.

Graduate student Alexia Cassman, sophomore Carli Betz, senior Kaia Gray, senior Katelyn Paris, freshman Rachel Ong and senior Stephanie McCoy were all recognized for their accomplishments inside the classroom.

Sam Houston was also recognized as a NTCA All-Academic Scholar team with a 3.531 team GPA this past season.

“Academics have and will always be a staple of this program as the student in student-athlete is always put first,” head coach Brad Hagen said. “We’ve had ladies go on to do amazing things from the medical world to Ivy League schools, and it’s a testament to our university curriculum as well as the ladies’ hard work in the classroom. To add six more this year is a great accomplishment and of those six, four of them had 4.0 GPAs this spring.”

The Bearkats now have 57 NTCA All-Academic Scholar Athletes in the program’s 14 seasons.

The NTCA recognizes student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom throughout the academic year. This year there are 364 honorees, representing NCAA bowling programs at 75 schools.

A student athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher for the academic school year to qualify for this award.
