Hodgkinson’s immediate reaction to following Moraa across the line in Budapest suggested only Olympic gold will satisfy her.
A lot has changed in three years.
Not lottery funded before making the podium in Tokyo, Hodgkinson had the 2024 Games in mind as she plotted her path to the pinnacle of the sport. The large mural celebrating her achievements in her home town of Atherton indicates she is well ahead of schedule.
Still only 22, Hodgkinson continues to uncover her potential, which has taken her to seven senior international medals.
That is now paired with rich experience of competing at the highest level, and a maturity she has shown to use the near-misses of recent years as motivation in pursuit of future glory.
“I would like to one day be considered one of the best Britain has ever had and I just keep working towards making that happen,” says Hodgkinson.
“Trevor and Jenny have a plan. I just turn up and do the best that I can all the time.
“I think it would be very emotional [to win gold in Paris].”
Hodgkinson is expected to defend her European 800m title in Rome in June, a gold she is favourite for in the absence of both Moraa and Mu.
Beyond that, she will aim to confirm her Olympic place at the UK Championships, before making her first appearance at the London Diamond League to complete her Paris preparations.
But first, it is to Eugene, where a familiar foe awaits as anticipation builds towards Hodgkinson’s next bid to stand on top of the world.
“No matter the result at this time of year there is always something to learn,” Hodgkinson says.
“It will give me a gauge of where I’m at, and where [my rivals] are at.
“It’s just a good chance to get a practice round in. I will go for the win, but we’ll see what the day brings.”
