Leading with Heart: Dr. Phyllis D. Combs’ Legacy of Education and Empowerment

Dr. Phyllis D. Combs’ journey in education is a powerful story of service, leadership, and lifelong learning. From the classrooms of Dayton, Ohio, to the halls of Harvard, Dr. Combs has dedicated over 35 years to uplifting students, families, and communities through her unwavering commitment to education.

A defining moment in her career was stepping into leadership as a principal at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. “I saw leadership not just as a role but as a responsibility to advocate for those who might not have a voice,” Dr. Combs shares. That belief fueled her drive to create supportive environments for students with disabilities and at-risk youth, ensuring every child had access to quality education and resources.

When asked what motivates her continued engagement in community service, Dr. Combs reflects, “Education doesn’t end when students leave the classroom. I believe in meeting families where they are and providing holistic support.” Through voter registration drives, senior citizen outreach, and mentoring school-age females, she extends her impact far beyond the school walls, embodying the spirit of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Dr. Combs’ perspective on leadership has evolved into one centered on collaboration and compassion. “Leadership is about lifting others while continuing to learn,” she explains. Even after transitioning from administrative roles, she continues serving as an intervention specialist, working directly with students with disabilities—a testament to her hands-on approach and deep-rooted care.

For Dr. Combs, the Honors of Distinction is more than recognition—it’s a reflection of decades of purposeful service. “I hope my story inspires others to invest in their communities, to be advocates, and to never stop learning.”
