He continued: “When you get to my age, and injuries are just around the corner, you have to take every day as it comes.
“So it’s nice to have that pipedream and work to it – but it’s steady progress each day.”
Peterborough’s Smith won the pommel horse silver at the London Games and also helped Britain to a team bronze.
Afterwards, he competed in Strictly Come Dancing and focused on other media commitments before announcing his comeback six months ago.
At the time, Smith described his bid to reach Glasgow 2014 as his “last hurrah”, and after failing to make the British team for this year’s European Championships, it looked as if returning to the fold would be a struggle.
But the Huntingdon Gymnastic Club athlete was boosted this week by being named in the England squad to go to the Commonwealth Games in July.
“What do I do after Glasgow? Who knows? I’ve enjoyed being back and proving people wrong,” he said, adding that “2014 has been a busy year with a lot of planning, so it’s going to be hard to challenge for the World Championships”.
“But I’ll keep training and in 2015, I’m certainly not writing anything off. So in 2016 we’ll see what happens,” he added.
“It seems silly to waste the talent that I’ve discovered I still have. Maybe I will bring back one or two apparatus and eventually prove to the selectors I am worth picking for the Great Britain squad.
