The Irish Athletic Boxing Association has announced a 22-strong training squad for this summer’s Olympic Games.
Tokyo Games medallist Aidan Walsh is named at 71k although Dean Walsh has won the past two national titles.
Walsh is in pole position to take the place at the first World Qualifier at the end of February.
The squad includes the Paris qualified Kellie Harrington, Aoife O’Rourke, Michaela Walsh, Jack Marley and Dean Clancy.
Commonwealth champions Jude Gallagher and Dylan Eagleson are named at 57kg along with Adam Hession but Gallagher beat them both to claim the national title in December.
The women’s 66kg sees Amy Broadhurst, Lisa O’Rourke and Grainne Walsh named and again Walsh has won the past two national titles.
Internal assessments will be made before the Irish squad is named for the World Qualifier in Italy.
“This is an incredibly talented squad, and it’s an achievement to be named within it – boxers, their club coaches and families can rightfully be proud,” said Zauri Antia, high performance head coach.
