Rose Bowl Institute Hosts Dialogue on Philanthropy and Giving Back – Pasadena Now

The Rose Bowl Institute, an arm of the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation that champions sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship, recently hosted a Rose Table Dialogue focused on “Teaching the World How to Give.”

The event, held on Thursday, May 2nd in the Charles E. Young Locker Room at the Rose Bowl Stadium, brought together over 20 athletes and foundation leaders to discuss various ways individuals can give back to society through their time, talent, and treasure.

The dialogue was co-moderated by Betty Uribe, Ph.D., a best-selling author and industry expert in leadership, and Jim McCarthy, a SXSW and TED-U speaker and podcaster. Participants included Super Bowl champions, professional athletes, and foundation leaders who shared their personal experiences and insights on the power of giving back.

“The Rose Bowl Institute is about gathering individuals in one space such as this to discuss inspiring topics,” said Mark Shuster, founding donor of the Rose Bowl Institute, representing the Shuster Family Foundation. “It’s about fostering inspiration, leadership, and exchanging ideas. The impact it has through the Rose Bowl Institute and on everyone’s foundations here can be truly remarkable.”

The dialogue addressed several key issues, including defining the manifestations of giving across time, talent, and treasure; embracing diverse experiences and narratives, strategizing methods to educate others about the significance of giving, and formulating strategies to disseminate this ethos of generosity globally. The dialogue concluded by brainstorming ways participants can lead by example, drawing from personal experiences, and emphasizing the importance of effectively mentoring and motivating others to engage in giving.

“Teaching the world to give is not just about charity; it’s about empowering individuals to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, fostering empathy, compassion, and a sense of collective responsibility,” said James Washington, Rose Bowl Institute President. “Through the heartfelt dialogue and shared experiences, participants in the dialogue exemplified the transformative power of giving, illustrating how each act of generosity can ripple outward, creating a wave of positive change that transcends boundaries and enriches communities worldwide.”
