Several local students recognized for academic and athletic achievements

NEWPORT –– Several local students have been recognized for their outstanding academic and athletic achievements at various colleges and universities.

Tia-Marie Martinez of Orleans was honored with the “Play of the Year” award by the student-athlete advisory committee at American International College (AIC) in Springfield, Massachusetts. The award, selected via a vote by student-athletes on the AIC athletics Instagram account, recognized Tia-Marie’s home-court clinching three-point shot for women’s basketball against Saint Anselm College. Tia-Marie was also among 18 student-athletes recognized for their outstanding contributions to the success of the AIC department of athletics during the 2023-24 athletic awards night held on April 24.

Britton Beswick of Derby Line achieved the highest GPA for their class year in the veterinary science technology program at the State University of New York Canton in Canton, New York. Ms. Beswick was one of nearly 200 students to receive an award at the 2024 Frederick W. Saburro Honors Convocation.

Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, New Hampshire, named Trenton May and Trinity Wheeler, both of Newport, to its winter 2024 dean’s list.

The university also named several students to its winter 2024 president’s list, including Jennifer Bessette of Montgomery Center, Erica Welton and Glenn Nutting of Barton, Angelina Aguilar-Estrada, Brittany Berry, and Shawn Rice of Newport, and Valerie Faust of Brownington.

These students have demonstrated exceptional dedication to their studies and extracurricular activities, and their achievements serve as an inspiration to their peers and the community at large.
