The Power of Preparation: Dr. Cicley Gay’s Lifelong Commitment to Justice and Change

Dr. Cicley Gay is more than a leader—she is a force of intentional advocacy whose mission is deeply personal and profoundly impactful. With over two decades of service in nonprofit, philanthropic, and social justice spaces, she has championed marginalized voices while preparing both her sons—and the world—for a more equitable future.

As the founder of The Amplifiers, a trailblazing social enterprise focused on cause and communications, Dr. Gay empowers organizations to align messaging with meaningful action. In 2022, her unwavering passion led her to the national spotlight as Chairwoman of the Board for Black Lives Matter, where she continues to influence policy and amplify the fight for systemic justice. “This isn’t a moment—it’s a movement,” she often says, reminding others that impactful change requires strategy and heart.

When asked about the values that shaped her path, Dr. Gay reflects, “Service was never optional—it was foundational.” Her journey began with two terms in AmeriCorps and quickly evolved through her leadership at STAND, where she educated students on how federal policies affect under-resourced communities. Her heart for youth remained central during her decade-long tenure with the Women’s Sports Foundation, where she launched GoGirlGo! to expand access to physical activity for young girls in underserved areas.

A defining chapter in her career came during her role at the National CARES Mentoring Movement, where she helped build a multi-million-dollar national mentorship initiative, earning the support of the U.S. Department of Juvenile Justice. “Mentorship saves lives,” she shares. “It creates the scaffolding for possibility.”

Dr. Gay has received numerous accolades, including the President’s Volunteer Service Award under President Obama and SUCCESS Magazine’s 50 Women of Impact in 2025. Yet, she proudly claims her most meaningful title as “Mom of the Year.” “I prepared my sons for the world,” she says. “Now, I’m preparing the world for them.”
