Hear from the students
Victor Adewale from Nigeria
Victor Adewale’s journey to the CAS began with a childhood passion for politics, which was sparked by his engagement in debates at school. While it was the University of Memphis’ beautiful campus that initially caught his eye, it was the quality of the political science program that cemented his decision.
His coursework has already had a profound impact on him, particularly in Comparative Politics. “We had a topic that related back to Africa… I like the fact that people here are also aware of African politics,” he reflects.
Adewale praises Professor Madlock, his freshman government instructor, for fostering an environment that encourages open dialogue and mutual learning. Their discussions often bridge cultural divides, as the student draws from his background and shares insights from Nigeria’s political landscape.
Another highlight of his academic experience came during a research project for his English class, where he examined a pressing local issue with a research focus on how job creation could alleviate crime, tying local challenges to broader societal change. Adewale attributes his drive to make a difference to the CAS’s focus on turning academic knowledge into actionable solutions.
“I believe in making a change,” he says. “If I get in power, I want my actions to speak louder than my words.”
Shuhd Ahmed from Yemen
Upon arriving at UofM, Shuhd Ahmed began her studies with the university’s Intensive English for Internationals (IEI) programme to strengthen her English skills. After completing the course, she transitioned into her current major in biochemistry, aligning with her long-term goal of pursuing a career in medicine. “I love chemistry,” she says, “It’s a combination of math and science, which is what I enjoy.”
Support has been a consistent theme throughout Shuhd’s academic journey. Outside of the classroom, her organic chemistry professor, Dr. Garner, is guiding her in the use of gas chromatography (GC) for a project she plans to present at UofM’s Works in Progress event.
Shuhd is also receiving guidance on her next steps — applying to medical school. “My advisor helps me understand what’s required, like shadowing, volunteering, maintaining a good GPA, and being more engaged in university activities,” she says. “We’re going to start the application this semester, and it’s exciting.”
As Shuhd looks ahead to medical school, there’s much she’ll miss about life at UofM, particularly the sense of belonging. “Honestly, I feel like a citizen here,” she says. “Everyone has been welcoming, and it’s a great place to start your academic journey.”
