A leader in healthcare education

Dr. Lee Kau Han’s vibrant career began at Taipei Medical University. Originally from Malaysia, he moved several thousands miles away to Taiwan — a worthwhile journey as he would be joining a university he describes as his “ideal choice” for several reasons.

“The tuition fees for medical programmes in Taiwan are relatively lower than those abroad, which is an important consideration for many students,” he says. “Additionally, medical students in Taiwan can work part-time to cover their living expenses, making it more affordable and feasible. These factors made Taipei Medical University stand out among many other options in both Taiwan and abroad.”

Today, Dr. Lee is a Chief Physician at the Chi Mei Medical Centre and a specialist of the Taiwan Urology Association.

His story debunks any notion that an affordable medical degree compromises quality. Many come to Taipei Medical University for similar reasons: high ROI, strong academics, and global opportunities. Here, you’ll find state-of-the-art research facilities and teams, along with collaborations with leading research institutions worldwide, that enable study abroad and exchange programmes.

“Taipei Medical University is renowned for its rigorous academic training and abundant clinical internship opportunities,” says Dr. Lee. “My time here not only enhanced my theoretical knowledge but also cultivated my ability to apply it in clinical practice. It was the ideal place for my studies.”

Although it has been some time since he graduated, Dr. Lee still recalls how attending Taipei Medical University inspired his current field of work. Back then, he took on an internship that allowed him to work in urology; his interest grew, and he eventually decided to specialise in it.

“I still remember professors and mentors who had a profound impact on my learning and career,” he says. “They inspired me with their own clinical experiences, which only sparked a deeper interest in my own understanding and passion for medicine. Their teaching and support were undoubtedly among the most valuable aspects of my time at TMU.”

After graduation, Dr. Lee joined the urology department at the Chi Mei Medical Centre. Aside from cutting-edge theoretical and practical acumen, Taipei Medical University gave him one other advantage – excellent communication skills, the ability to work well in a team, and humility, essential qualities of a good medical practitioner.

“Taipei Medical University prepared me well in these aspects, especially through internships and other part-time work experiences during my programme,” says Dr. Lee. “The experience was valuable, especially in the early stages of my career, and helped me adapt smoothly to the clinical work environment and its demands.”

Cutting-edge, world-changing medical programmes

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, all of which produce leading experts at the forefront of modern healthcare. What they all share in common is their emphasis on a robust theoretical foundation coupled with extensive clinical training — both of which equip students with the knowledge and practical skills essential for professional success.

Take nursing, for example. Taipei Medical University ranks among the top 25 globally and first among domestic universities for nursing education, according to the QS World University Rankings 2024. Its College of Nursing is proud to have cultivated outstanding nurses since its inception in 1963, and offers bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programmes that aim to address the growing demand for trained professionals. As a student here, you’ll conduct your practicum across five affiliated hospitals, complete with advanced technology and simulations to train your nursing skills and navigate the challenges of holistic care.

Another highlight is the university’s Graduate Institute of Mind, Brain and Consciousness (GIMBC). The department offers both master’s and PhD programmes tailored to equip students with the technical and intellectual skills needed to understand modern brain science. Students gain research knowledge and experience by cycling through lab rotations, industry seminars, and weekly research exchanges. Those from the US interested in joining the department full-time can apply for the Fulbright scholarship.

Other scholarships are available, too. There are funding options for research and internships, ranging from fully-funded programmes to short-term onsite internships. The Taiwan Experience Education Programme (TEEP), a government initiative, encourages more international students to participate in short-term, professional internship projects to gain experience. Another option is the International Internship Pilot Programme (IIPP), which allows international talents to carry out research in key scientific fields in Taiwan for up to three months at academic and research institutions.
