LK Advani Bharat Ratna Highlights: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani, while thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu for the Bharat Ratna, said that it was an honour not just for him as a person “but also for ideals and principles that I strove to serve”. “Since joining RSS, I sought reward only in dedicated and selfless service of my beloved country in whatever task life assigned to me,” news agency PTI quoted him as saying. PM Modi announced Saturday that Advani will be conferred with the prestigious Bharat Ratna, calling the BJP stalwart’s contributions to the development of India “monumental”. The announcement was welcomed by several leaders of the BJP and its allies. Crediting Advani with strengthening democracy in India, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh wrote: “The significant contribution that Advani ji has made to the country’s development and nation building in various roles during his long public life is unforgettable and inspiring.” Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said this was a move to “honour the decades of his service to the nation, commitment for the integrity of the country and setting high standards of morality in political life.”
During his long political innings, Advani occupied several party and government posts which included the post of Deputy Prime Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, Leader of Opposition and BJP President. The Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, is conferred in recognition of “exceptional service/performance of the highest order”. Instituted in 1954, the list of awardees includes Indira Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and Vajpayee, among others.
