In Latin America and the Caribbean, the effects of climate change are already evident, with rising temperatures, changes in precipitation and an increase in the frequency and intensity of droughts, floods and other adverse and catastrophic events. 9 out of 10 children in the region are exposed to at least two overlapping climate and environmental shocks, according to UNICEF’s first Child Climate Risk Index.
The 2nd Conference on Scientific Evidence and Public Policy: Climate Change in Latin America and the Caribbean, seeks to make the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) visible at the regional level, while contributing multisectoral perspectives on climate reflection and action. This space is built as a continuation of the conference held in June 2021, which brought together more than 15 countries, 870 participants and analysed more than 3 IPCC reports.
The meeting will be conformed by international experts, representatives of civil society, indigenous peoples, decision makers and the Youth Delegation, conformed by adolescents and young activists from Latin America and the Caribbean. The young people of the region, are being protagonists of change and desperately asking governments to act urgently and ambitiously. The Meri Foundation, UNICEF and the youth of Latin America and the Caribbean are joining forces to empower this new generation whose action is, undoubtedly, one of the keys when addressing the climate and environmental crisis.
This conference will serve as a prelude to COP26´s Momentum in Glasgow 2021. It seeks to create synergies between academia, policy makers, youth and NGOs regarding the climate action that needs to be implemented in the region.
