PIMLICO STATE HIGH SCHOOL

SCHOOLS OF EXCELLENCE: PIMLICO STATE HIGH SCHOOL.

At Pimlico State High School, excellence in education goes hand-in-hand with a nurturing, inclusive culture.

Executive Principal Steve Baskerville describes the school as “a proud public school with a long history of graduating scholars who are well-rounded in their academic, sporting and performing arts pursuits”.

With a strong academic focus and an equally strong commitment to student wellbeing, Pimlico is a standout in the Queensland educational landscape.

Tradition of Academic Achievement

Pimlico State High School’s academic prowess is evident in the achievements of its students. “In 2023, nearly one third of our graduates attained an ATAR above 90,” Mr Baskerville says. This impressive statistic is a testament to the school’s dedication to academic excellence, which serves as a foundation for students’ post-school success in prestigious university pathways, further studies, training and employment.

Underpinning this success is Pimlico’s longstanding CARE philosophy –
Co-operate, Appreciate, Respect and Effort.

“CARE symbolises our school-wide commitment to a learning culture that is inclusive and collaborative,” Mr Baskerville says. This philosophy fosters a supportive environment where staff and students thrive.

DiverseOfferings for Students and Families

One of Pimlico’s strengths is its ability to offer a wide range of subjects and pathways.

“We are large enough to maintain a huge range of subjects to cater for different interests and strengths, while still feeling very much like a community,” Mr Baskerville says. “The school has excellent teachers with expert subject knowledge and in many cases a vast array of real-world experience in their teaching areas.”

For instance, Pimlico recently achieved PADI Education Facility status, allowing it to certify students in diving through its highly qualified marine program.

Beyond academics, Pimlico places a strong emphasis on student wellbeing.

“All of our teachers are focused on student wellbeing and are supported by a range of wellbeing professionals and support staff,” Mr Baskerville says. “Staff work together to provide support to all students. The school provides a busy schedule of lunchtime activities to ensure students are positively engaged during break times.”

Global Citizenship Focus

Pimlico aspires to “make a world of difference” through its programs and graduates. With a school-wide focus on Global Citizenship and a specialist Global Studies pathway, students are prepared for the global challenges of tomorrow.

“In 2020, we won the Showcase Award for Global Engagement, Queensland Government’s highest educational award for schools focused on global citizenship,” Mr Baskerville proudly shares.

“Pimlico State High School is also only one of two Queensland schools to hold accreditation with the Council of International Schools, a global school accreditation organisation that rigorously reviews all aspects of the school’s operations.

“The school is accredited with Education Queensland International to host international students, who enrich what is already a culturally diverse student population.”

SCHOOLS OF EXCELLENCE: PIMLICO STATE HIGH SCHOOL

Unique Programs and Achievements

Pimlico is known for its three main signature programs. The school boasts one of Queensland’s finest music programs, a renowned Global Studies Program, and a dynamic STEM Academy. “In 2024, we opened the Denise Glasgow Performing Arts Centre, a $20m state-of-the-art facility that enhances our outstanding creative arts programs,” Mr Baskerville says.

“With nearly 400 students enrolled in Instrumental Music, 10 specialised instrumental music teachers and a director of music, the school caters for students with a range of musical skills and interests. Each year, music students put on numerous concerts, including the famous Pimlico Presents, which draws sellout crowds.”

The school’s flagship Global Studies Program is aimed at students who have worked hard in their learning, have a passion for leadership and service, and are ready for extension in the knowledge and skills they will need to be successful.

“Students from this program are actively engaged with a number of partner organisations and develop strong links to other students and professionals from around the world,” Mr Baskerville says.

“In 2024, two students from this program were selected as part of the Queensland Premier’s Anzac Prize, which selects eight students from across Queensland to represent our state during the Anzac Day Service at Villers-Bretonneux. Pimlico was the only school to have two students selected for this prestigious award.”

The STEM Academy provides opportunities for students to deepen their knowledge of STEM within the curriculum, and through extra-curricular activities. Opportunities such as the Hydrogen Grand Prix and F1 in Schools are engaging opportunities for students to apply their learning in an exciting context.

A Strong Sense of Community

“Student leadership is an important part of Pimlico’s identity,” Baskerville says. Initiatives like Together Tuesdays, led by senior students, engage hundreds of students across the school in games and challenges, fostering a strong sense of community.

As Pimlico State High School continues to evolve, it remains steadfast in its mission to empower students.

“We are dedicated to providing a nurturing and challenging environment where every child can thrive,” Mr Baskerville says. “With a commitment to continuous improvement and an inclusive community, Pimlico is well-equipped to guide its students toward a bright and successful future.”

ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL, MUNDINGBURRA

SCHOOLS OF EXCELLENCE: ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL, MUNDINGBURRA.

It is with much excitement that St Joseph’s Catholic School Mundingburra celebrates 100 years of Catholic Education in the Townsville Diocese in 2024 – a significant milestone highlighting the impact that faith-based education has had on generations of students. Over a century, St Joseph’s Mundingburra has played a vital role in nurturing spiritual, intellectual, and social growth. We owe a debt of gratitude to St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and the Sisters of St Joseph, as well as the many dedicated teachers, staff, parents, caregivers and volunteers who have worked tirelessly.

Centenary celebrations commenced this year with our 100 Year Opening Mass, where past staff, families and parishioners joined our school community, with Bishop Timothy Harris presiding. Also present were a number of invited guests, including the Executive Director of Townsville Catholic Education, Jacqui Francis, members of the school’s Service Team, past principals of the school, Father Sheldrick who was actually a past student of the school and members of the Josephite Companions. And Deacon Will Brennan was co-presider.

Towards the end of term 1, the school community came together to capture a special image for our centenary celebrations. Current staff and students gathered on the oval and formed the shape of 100. It was a lovely moment of unity and pride.

ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL, MUNDINGBURRA.

This term, our staff and students were the recipients of a special gift by the school. Each received a centenary shirt to be worn every Monday for the rest of the year.

The school has a beautiful life-size sandstone statue of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, one of the school’s patron saints, along with St Joseph. As part of our anniversary, the school is commissioning a life-size sandstone statue of St Joseph (with Jesus), making the representation of our patron saints on school grounds complete.

Students, supported by staff, will also be contributing to a time capsule to be buried on school grounds and potentially dug up at the school’s 125th anniversary.

Events are also being planned for our Centenary Celebration weekend from August 23-25. On the Friday, St Joseph’s Mundingburra presents Centennial Chronicles: The St Joseph’s Story, and practice sessions are now in full swing.

On the Saturday our Family Fun Day starts at 3:30pm, with school tours, memorabilia display, rides for the children, food, drinks and free entertainment. On the Sunday a 7:30am Mass at Holy Trinity Church will be followed by morning tea.

It has been wonderful to witness the coming together of our school community towards a common goal.

We are proud of what has been achieved in the past 100 years, and look forward to working together to build an even brighter future for St Joseph’s Catholic School Mundingburra in the years to come.

Learning at St Joseph’s Mundingburra is fun, but there are still high expectations for our behaviour and work. Learning has a good combination of ‘fun’ and being ‘serious’ and our teachers are supportive. There are heaps of opportunities provided, including lunchtime activities, groups to be a part of and sporting opportunities. We are lucky to be able to be part of groups like Tech Club, Earth Warriors and Eco Marines. There are a lot of extra curricular activities on offer. Our school has a community feel and everyone knows each other. We are a safe, caring, inclusive community, where everyone belongs and we are known by our staff. The school has a lot of greenery with lovely big trees. There is respect for others as we follow the ‘Joey’s Way’.

ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL, THE STRAND

SCHOOLS OF EXCELLENCE: ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL, THE STRAND.

St Joseph’s Catholic School, The Strand, has proudly unveiled its latest community addition,
The Village.

This innovative project is designed to promote and support oral language, socialisation and vocabulary development by engaging children in immersive role-playing experiences within a vibrant, interactive setting.

The Village boasts a variety of dynamic environments, including a cafe, hospital, school, farmers market, construction area, garage and the charming chicken coop, aptly named the Chick Inn.

These diverse, real-life scenarios provide a rich backdrop for children to interact with teachers and peers, enriching their language skills in an engaging, hands-on manner.

ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL, THE STRAND.

“Our new Village exemplifies the saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’,” says Principal Timothy Ham.

“By creating an environment that encourages children to role-play using real-life scenarios, we’re giving them the opportunity to enhance their vocabulary and construct grammatically correct sentences within context. This approach is incredibly beneficial for their language development, as they are learning in a fun and meaningful way.”

During the crucial first five years of life, children experience significant growth in vocabulary, sentence construction and overall language comprehension.

Recognising this critical developmental window, St Joseph’s Catholic School has dedicated resources to The Village, designed expressly to bolster these fundamental literacy skills essential for reading development.

ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL, THE STRAND.

Interacting with adults and the “Literacy Boost Buddies” in the Village provides students with the skills and vocabulary needed to enhance their language development. This method ensures that St Joseph’s students benefit from evidence-based reading and writing practices, developing a robust foundation for future academic success.

“We are deeply grateful to MJW Building Worx for their extraordinary design and construction of this project and to the Parents and Friends Association for their unwavering support,” Mr Ham says.

“Their contributions have made Joey’s Village a reality, enabling us to offer these unparalleled learning opportunities to our students.”

We are Joey’s on The Strand or also known as the school with the biggest sandpit in their backyard. Our school excels at everything from sports to academics, and our teachers make learning fun and even wear crazy costumes. The Village is our latest learning addition, which has been built to promote literacy learning for our younger students. It offers a variety of learning opportunities and real-life experiences where children can extend their language and social skills while having fun. At our school, we all have a voice and are provided with equal opportunities regardless of our differences. We are 151 years old which makes us the oldest and wisest Catholic school in the Townsville Diocese. We have a very close knit community that feels like family. I am proud to be a Joey’s kid.

KIRWAN STATE SCHOOL

SCHOOLS OF EXCELLENCE: KIRWAN STATE SCHOOL

Kirwan State School defies the notion that high-quality education must come with a hefty price tag.

At the heart of KSS’s ethos is a commitment to fostering safe, respectful and responsible learners.

“Our staff care for each and every child,” Mr Kratzmann says. “From our teaching staff to teacher aides, cleaners to administration, we are very well trained and invested in being good in our roles.”

KIRWAN STATE SCHOOL

One of the hallmarks of KSS is its commitment to continuous improvement.

Recently, the school underwent a comprehensive three-day review by independent evaluators, who interviewed various stakeholders, including staff, parents and students.

The overwhelmingly positive feedback highlighted KSS’s student-centric approach, effective curriculum delivery and strong community involvement. Mr Kratzmann says the feedback from the review is used for planning to make the school even stronger.

“In short, the review confirmed students are at the centre of all decision-making, staff are on point with curriculum and teaching and valued the direction of the school, systems are in place to monitor and promote learning and build teacher capability, community is on board and collaboration is championed.”

Mr Kratzmann says the school is grateful for the community’s trust.

For parents seeking high-quality education and boundless opportunities for their children, Kirwan State School shines brightly as a symbol of excellence and inclusivity.

WHAT MAKES MY SCHOOL EXCELLENT?

KIRWAN STATE SCHOOL captains Harlow and Gaius.

Gaius, School Captain

There are many reasons why my school is excellent but I will list six. First is because of how amazing the teachers are. There’s a teacher who makes me feel like myself. She made me feel that I could talk to anyone and that’s the reason why I wanted to become a leader (thanks Miss Hall). The second reason is the kids. Even though they’re silly, kind, naughty or loud, that’s what makes this school an amazing school. Third is because of the events, for example Colour Run, ANZAC Day and many more. Fourth are the principals of our school. They make everyone’s day by talking, telling jokes or chatting to them and that’s what makes this school a spectacular school. Fifth is the library. The library is important because kids love to read and the library is the best place to discover what they love to read. The last reason is the school, the school is excellent because of the joy kids bring at the start to the last day of school.

Harlow, School Captain

Kirwan State Primary School is an excellent place to learn and make new friends for many reasons, such as the incredible staff that help all students strive to excel. This amazing school has all of the extra learning resources needed to assist Kirwan kids with their tasks. Not only does this school provide fun playing equipment for lunch times, it also has playgrounds and ovals that are well managed by the hardworking groundsman. This school has two epic computer labs that are located in the spectacular and fun library. Last but definitely not least, students have HPE and music lessons where they can experience different sports and use and play a variety of musical instruments to find their special flair. Kirwan is a great school to attend and make lifelong memories when participating in the many extraordinary activities that this school has to offer.
