Mysuru: Deputy commissioner KV Rajendra on Saturday highlighted the role of both farmers and consumers in conservation, preservation of various indigenous (desi) varieties of rice.He was speaking at the two-day Desi Rice Mela organised to showcase a variety of indigenous rice. It was jointly organised by Sahaja Samrudha in collaboration with Rebuild India Fund and Save Our Rice Campaign held at Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry here.He said that the nation, which was rich in agricultural diversity, has a different food culture. The farmers of the country preserved and conserved thousands of varieties of rice from time immemorial. India was home to over a lakh varieties of rice, but now about 30,000 varieties of rice are available. There is an urgent need to preserve these rice varieties for our future generations, Rajendra said.He appreciated the organisers for not only showcasing and sensitizing the people about conservation of desi varieties of rice, but also promoting farmers like Geetha Sreenivasa Murthy from Siddanahundi village in T Narasipura and organic farmer Boregowda for preserving desi paddy varieties. The mela displayed 30 varieties of rice, including Gandhasale, Ambemour and Jeeriga Samba.
Food competitionThe public desi rice food competition has been organised on May 19 from 12.30pm, while there will be a painting contest for children below 12 years from 10.30am.
