Dwight Global Online School: Flexible, Rigorous, and Effective

At just 14 years old, Lulu Lin from Toronto, Canada, has already mastered balancing her passion for figure skating and her academic ambitions; and it’s all thanks to Dwight Global — the online campus of the Dwight Schools network, which includes campuses in New York, London, Shanghai, Seoul, Dubai, and Hanoi. Joining the school was a decision she and her family made out of a need. She had a demanding training schedule to keep pace with.

Lin’s daily routine now is far from typical, simply because it doesn’t have to be. Training both on and off the ice for 30 to 35 hours a week, her commitment to skating can now be as strong as she wants it to be. “I train in the mornings, late afternoons, evenings, and on weekends — my Dwight schedule revolves around that,” shares Lin. This level of flexibility is something she couldn’t find in a traditional school setting, where missing days or half-days for competitions often left her feeling out of place.

But at Dwight Global, she found a community that understood her needs. “I’m not the standout person anymore, because here, other students are engaged in intensive sports,” says Lin. “For example, there are a lot of tennis players, but there are many others focused on ballet and acting. Of course, some of my friends are figure skaters as well.”

Immersed and engaged, Lin’s first year with Dwight was about way more than just fitting her studies around her skating; it was about letting passions flourish whilst finding new ones too. “I love art and English,” she says. To fit her busy schedule, Lin’s art teacher even set up a separate class just for her. Such keen attention is part of Dwight’s approach, where teachers go the extra mile to ensure students can excel both academically and personally.

And excel, Lin has. In March, she competed at the 2024 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Taipei. Dwight Global granted a two-week extension on her work which allowed her to focus on the training and competition. Lin went on to achieve her impressive 10th-place finish. “Every grade has a dean, and mine helped me reach out to my teachers when I needed adjustments to my schedule,” she says.

Indeed, the school’s instructional model is as flexible as it is rigorous. From Grade 10, students can enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. By Grade 11, they can pursue the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).

Both curricula follow a blended, flipped synchronous seminar approach that mimics the college experience. Courses fuse synchronous, real-time online classes with asynchronous elements, like recorded lectures and interactive activities. This enables students to engage with the material at their own pace.

Live classes at Dwight Global are designed for active participation, with students discussing, debating, and working on projects together. The college-style schedule facilitates  classes meeting twice a week. For those needing extra guidance, the school offers Oxford-style tutorials. Such support was key for Shubham Kumar from Mumbai, India, who grew up in multicultural Malaysia and Dubai.

He sought a school that reflected his global upbringing. Kumar’s decision to join Dwight Global was also closely tied to his entrepreneurial journey. “At that time, I had just started my business, and I realised that I needed more flexibility in my schedule,” he says. “Dwight Global provided the perfect solution.”

LeapCharger was born out of Kumar’s deep interest in sustainability and technology, combined with a keen awareness of the growing demand for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. His background in renewable energy, highlighted by winning the Uber Global Hackathon with a carbon emission tracking app, provided a solid foundation for this venture.

Balancing the rigorous demands of the IBDP with running a startup is no small feat, but Kumar credits Dwight Global’s flexibility with making it possible. The school’s online platform has enabled him to maintain his academic responsibilities even while travelling for his business. “This flexibility was crucial in allowing me to seize opportunities that required my immediate attention,” he says.

On the go, he dove deeper into Business Management and Economics. These classes provided practical insights into business operations and market dynamics, which Kumar frequently applies to LeapCharger. Dwight Global’s focus on project-based learning further encouraged applying academic concepts to real-world scenarios. For the 18-year-old business owner, school projects entailed creating business plans and analysing market trends — exposure that will come in handy when Kumar pursues further studies in business management.

At Dwight Global, all students achieve their dreams — whether that means winning national titles, shaking up industries, or getting into top US colleges and universities like Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Princeton, and Yale.
