Elgin police holding Heroes Unite Autism Acceptance event
The Elgin Police Department will be hosting its third annual Heroes Unite Autism Acceptance community event from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 22 outside the police station, 151 Douglas Ave., Elgin.
It’s being held in partnership with The Autism Hero Project, and this year will feature organizations that work to raise awareness of child abuse as well, a news release said.
Among the attractions offered will be a traffic stop simulation, vendors, raffles, giveaways, children’s activities and family resources.

DNA survey seeks input for new strategic growth plan
The Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin is conducting a survey through the end of April as part of its new strategic plan for continued city center growth and revitalization.
Input from the 17-question survey, analysis of market trends and local assets, feedback from the business community and suggestions from local officials will contribute to the content of the plan, which is being funded through an Illinois Department of Commerce grant.

East Dundee doing upgrades, other work at Village Hall
Work has started on renovations and improvements to East Dundee Village Hall, including installation of a bell in the bell tower, according to a village announcement.
Old windows will be replaced, second-floor asbestos removed, light fixtures upgraded, and tuckpointing and painting done at 120 Barrington Ave. building. Sporadic, short-term closures will be required during the six-week project, officials said
During closures, village staff will be available by phone or email and the exterior dropbox will be available for payments, the announcement said.

Annual YWCA Elgin Leader Luncheon to be held May 11
Tickets are being sold for the YWCA Elgin Leader Luncheon to be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at The Seville, 700 S. Barrington Road in Streamwood.
The annual event honors area women for their outstanding accomplishments and raises funds to support the nonprofit’s work.
This year the banquet will also award a scholarship to a high school senior. Keynote speaker will be Kane County Public Information Officer Julie Mann.

Spring Wine and Spirits Fest to fund parks scholarships
The Spring Wine and Spirits Fest, which raises money for the Elgin Youth Scholarship Fund, will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 22, in the Heritage Ballroom at The Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way, Elgin.
Scholarships help pay for children and teens to participate in Elgin Parks and Recreation Department programs that their families cannot afford.
The event will feature a sampling of wines and spirits as well as appetizers and desserts.

Elgin Community College holding fair to fill campus jobs
Elgin Community College is holding a job fair to fill positions at the school from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Monday, April 17, at Building E on the Elgin campus, 1700 Spartan Drive.
Hiring managers will be on hand to answer questions, and all attendees will have the opportunity to receive a free professional headshot.
Positions needing to be filled include groundskeeping and custodial staff, registration specialists, student success coaches and administrative assistants. No registration is necessary. Attendees are encouraged to bring copies of their resumes.

Tourism grants awarded to Nightmare on Chicago Street
State tourism grants have been awarded to the city of Elgin, which will receive $191,651 for the Nightmare on Chicago Street event, and Dundee Township Park District, which is being given $200,000 for design and development activities and for interpretive signage at the Randall Oaks Zoo in West Dundee.
The grants are part of a $22.5 million package that support 89 projects across Illinois, a news release from Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office said.
The Tourism Attractions and Festivals Grant program is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, with grant recipients selected through a competitive process with each applicant demonstrating how the award would help businesses based on things like proximity to commercial corridors, hotels, restaurants, retail businesses and other commercial operations, the release said.
In addition to the Elgin project, the College of DuPage Foundation in Glen Ellyn received $160,200 for the Andy Warhol Portfolios: A Life in Pop exhibition at the college and the city of Aurora received $192,779 for the Aurora Festival of Lights and German American Events received $43,471 for the Christkindlmarket Aurora winter festival.
