
The Garifuna Language in Schools curriculum was officially launched today at Holy Family Primary School Hopkins Village, Stann Creek District. The purpose of the program is to integrate teaching of Garifuna language in school settings. The launch was a collaboration between the National Garifuna Council through funding from the Battle of the Drums and the Ministry of Education, Culture Science, and technology. President of Battle of the Drums, Daris Avila spoke about the curriculum within the language class.
The curriculum was developed for infant one to standard six students and will be based on the Government’s school cycle. Chief Education Officer at the Ministry of Education Culture Science and Technology, Yolanda Gongora told Dangriga Correspondent Harry Arzu that the ministry is looking forward to rolling out the curriculum across the country.
Also present at today’s launch was Minister of Indigenous Affairs, Dolores Balderamos, Minister of State Louis Zabaneh, and President of the National Garifuna Council, Sheena Zuniga.
