Local students earn collegiate academic honors, degrees and other achievements – San Diego Union-Tribune


More colleges and universities from across the country have announced academic honors, degrees and other achievements earned by local students

Three students from the Rancho Bernardo area received academic honors from the University of Mississippi during the fall 2023 semester.

Chase Herring, an integrated marketing communication major, was named to the Dean’s Honor Roll. It is for students earning a semester GPA of 3.50 to 3.74 and completing at least 12 graded hours.

Alyssa Amaral, a criminal justice major, and Sophie Holland, a general business major, were named to the Chancellor’s Honor Roll. It is for students earning a semester GPA of 3.75-4.00 and completing at least 12 graded hours.

Mackenzie Rogers of Poway was among more than 2,500 students named to the fall 2023 Chancellor’s and Dean’s lists in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

To qualify for the Dean’s List, students had to achieve at least a 3.75 GPA during the semester and complete at least 12 credit hours. For the Chancellor’s List, students had to also earn a semester GPA of 4.0.

Three local students were among the 2,122 named to the fall 2023 Dean’s List at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. They are Allison Chackel of ZIP code 92127, Catherine Chackel of ZIP code 92127 and Abigail Walker of Poway.

To qualify, students had to earn a minimum 3.5 GPA and complete at least 12 credit hours.

Taylor Sakaguchi of Poway was among the more than 6,800 students named to the Deans’ List at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for fall 2023. Sakaguchi is a junior majoring in microbiology in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources To qualify, students had to earn a semester GPA of 3.75 or higher.

Two students from the Rancho Bernardo area earned academic honors from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Kian Chakamian earned Faculty Honors. This designation is for undergraduate students who earned a 4.0 academic average for the semester.

Devam Shrivastava made the Dean’s List. The honor is for undergraduate students who earned a 3.0 or higher academic average during the semester.

Emmanuel College in Boston named Sydney Bourassa the Rancho Bernardo area to its fall 2023 Dean’s List. To earn the honor, students needed to achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher for a 16-credit semester.

Tate Nelson of the Rancho Bernardo area was named to the Albion College Dean’s List for the fall 2023 semester. To be honored at the campus in Albion, Michigan students had to earn a semester GPA of 3.5 or above. Nelson is majoring in music education with concentrations in elementary and secondary education.

Logan Alsop of Poway and Ian Palmroos of the 92127 ZIP code were among more than 1,000 students named to Augustana College’s fall 2023 Dean’s List. They had to earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher at the campus in Rock Island, Illinois.

Alison Zorn, a sophomore from ZIP code 92127, was named to the Dean’s List at Hamilton College for the 2023 fall semester. To be honored by the campus in Clinton, New York, students had to earn a semester GPA of 3.5 or above.

Mya Kelley, an information security and assurance-interest major from the Rancho Bernardo area, was among nearly 5,900 students named to Kennesaw State University’s fall 2023 President’s List. To qualify, students had to earn a 4.0 GPA and complete a minimum of nine credit hours at the campus in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Sky Hutcheon from ZIP code 92127 was named to Emerson College’s Dean’s List for the fall 2023 semester. To be honored, students had to earn a semester GPA of 3.7 or higher at the Boston campus.

Hutcheon is a communication studies major and member of the Class of 2026.

Three local students were recently inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. It is billed as the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Membership is by invitation only.

The students are Britni Estes and Caitlin Harkenrider, both of ZIP code 92127 and attending the University of Southern California. Also inducted was Cassandra Onori of the Rancho Bernardo area, who attends California State University, Stanislaus.

Braeden Bourne of ZIP code 92127 was among 618 students named to the Hamline University College of Liberal Arts Dean’s List for the fall 2023 term. To qualify, students had to earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher and complete a minimum of 16 credit hours at the campus in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Simoni Dulanto of the Rancho Bernardo area was named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2023 semester at University of Maryland Global Campus. To be eligible, students had to complete at least six credits during the term, earn a GPA of at least 3.5 for the term and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5.

Andrew Wiesley, a member of the Class of 2024 from the Rancho Bernardo area, was named to the dean’s list at Tufts University for the fall 2023 semester. To be honored students had to earn a semester GPA of 3.4 or greater at the university’s campuses in Boston, Medford/Somerville and Grafton, Massachusetts.

Two locals were named to the Dean’s List at Rochester Institute of Technology for the fall 2023 semester. They had to be full-time degree-seeking undergraduates with a term GPA of 3.4 or higher and complete at least 12 credit hours at the campus in Rochester, New York.

Honored were Angela Lam of ZIP code 92127, who is in the physician assistant program; and Axel Parkkila of ZIP code 92128, who is in the computer science program.

Hailey Milgazo of Poway wasamong 752 students named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2023 semester at Illinois Wesleyan University. To qualify, students had to earn a GPA of 3.50 or higher. Milgazo is a first-year majoring in sociology and political science at the campus in Bloomington, Illinois.

Ten locals were among the approximately 1,600 students named to the Biola University Dean’s List for fall 2023. They had to earn a semester GPA of 3.6 or higher while enrolled in 12 or more credits and have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher at the campus in La Mirada.

Poway residents honored were Sophia Nau, a biological science major, and Allison Schreiber, an intercultural studies major.

Those from the Rancho Bernardo area who earned honors were Aidan Falk, a biological science major; Collin Hotze, a computer science major; Matthew Lewis, an engineering physics major; Adrian Rong, a sociology major; Brandon Noah Ruiz, a business administration major; Serena Shu, a psychology major; Raiden Tran, a biological science major; and Ashley Weeks, a liberal studies elementary education major.

Wyatt Richards of Poway was named to the fall 2023 Deans’ List at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Students had to earn a GPA between 3.5 and 3.89.

Cassandra Onori of the Rancho Bernardo area was among more than 2,000 students named to the fall 2023 Dean’s List at California State University, Stanislaus. To qualify, students had to earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher and complete at least 12 units of credit of graded coursework.

Four local students were named to the fall 2023 Dean’s List at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. To be honored, they had to earn a semester GPA of 3.70 or higher.

They are Khysa Gustafson and Chris Nicol, both of Poway; and El Umansky and Cameron Wood, both of the Rancho Bernardo area.

The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, recently named Grace E. Cooper of the Rancho Bernardo area as one of its top ROTC cadets for 2023-24.

Cooper, representing the Marine Corps, received the American Legion Scholastic Excellence Award. It was presented to one cadet from each branch – Army, Marine, Navy and Air Force – for demonstrating scholastic excellence.

Dylan Hines of Poway was among the 1,300 students honored on the Lewis University Dean’s List for the 2023 fall semester. Hines is studying exercise science at Lewis University Nursing and Health Sciences.

To be eligible for honors at the Romeoville, Illinois campus, students had to complete a minimum of 12 credit hours and earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

The University of Alabama recently swore in the new 2024 Student Government Association members. Among them was Cassidy Matwiyoff of the Rancho Bernardo area, who is the vice president for academic affairs on the SGA Executive Council at the campus in Tuscaloosa.

Chelsea Lomicka graduated cum laude from Azusa Pacific University on May 4. The 2020 Poway High graduate received her bachelor’s degree in cinematic arts, with an entertainment executive concentration.

Two locals were among the 1,118 students to graduate from Biola University during its commencement exercises on May 3 and 4 in La Mirada. They were Ashley Weeks from ZIP code 92127, a liberal studies elementary education major; and Jayden Saleh of ZIP code 92128, a Bible, theology and ministry major.

Dylan Hines of Poway was among the 368 Lewis University student-athletes honored for academic excellence on April 22 with the Brother David Delahanty, FSC Award. The Delahanty Award recognizes students who maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above while balancing the demands of athletics and academics.

Hines is on the men’s lacrosse team and studying exercise science at the campus in Romeoville, Illinois.
