University of Birmingham: Today’s learners, tomorrow’s educators

There are many reasons why the University of Birmingham attracts students from every corner of the globe. For over a century, the institute has been a powerhouse of teaching and research, ranking among the top 100 universities in the world (QS World University Rankings). Graduates do well; some even become Nobel Laureates. Many of their alumni cite a strong return on investment, understandably since the university is listed as the most targeted UK university by top graduate employers (High Fliers report, The Graduate Market 2024).

The School of Education ranks 64th globally and 11th in the UK for its offerings, a showing of the school’s ambitious and progressive approach to education and research. Campus is home to 4,000 international students from over 150 countries – every day, there are rich debates that add depth to seminar discussions. The city itself is one of the nation’s most diverse, a melting pot of cultures and a crucible of innovation.

“As someone deeply rooted in the field of education, I aspired to pursue a second master’s degree in educational leadership,” says MA Education (Leadership) graduate Suwaysa Jain. “While there were numerous universities to consider, I sought a lively, affordable city that didn’t compromise on academic excellence. That’s when I discovered Birmingham.”

Transformative programmes with strong return on investment

The school’s taught Masters and Professional Development Programmes can be tailored to suit individual passions and career goals across a variety of fields. Many join to pursue one, eager to deepen their understanding of education and explore research opportunities. Summer Haylock, who pursued the MA Education (Social Justice), was one of them.

“The part I have enjoyed most on the course is meeting people from across the world who share my passion for education and understanding their perspectives. I thoroughly enjoy seminars in which we can share our thoughts and explore the ideas of others, many of these ideas I may not have considered, and it is exciting to analyse them.”

The MA Education is a one-year full-time programme. Guided by academics and grounded in research, theory and practice, you’ll develop the skills needed to create a fairer, more inclusive education system and be ready to make a lasting impact. The curriculum spans leadership, special educational needs (SEN), and social justice; you’ll be guided by leading researchers from a top-ranked school from the first module to the last.

“The opportunity to collaborate and engage with a variety of lecturers and experts in their respective fields is brilliant,” affirms Haylock.

The MA Educational Leadership and Management has similar offerings. It’s also a one-year, full-time programme that prepares you for a career in education through diverse learning methods including: seminars, lectures, workshops and virtual learning. You’ll discuss issues with fellow students and learn about the latest tools and techniques in the field across a range of contemporary disciplines. Upon graduation, you’ll be in an ideal position to transform and improve the performance of your school, developing new educational practices or challenging them.

For those seeking flexible programmes, the MA Educational Leadership may be the answer you seek. The programme is delivered both online and in-person for 28 months, and is built on National Professional Qualifications to develop capacity for leadership and expert practice in schools. Whether you’re an experienced educator, policymaker, or researcher, this degree will equip you for an exciting range of careers in education leadership and institutional management while also opening doorways for further doctoral studies.

Regardless of choice, all programmes go beyond theoretical learning and research. They include significant and purposeful critical analysis and evidence-based learning. This aspect was what drew students like Summer and Suwaysa to join the School of Education.

“The university stands out for its exceptional employability rates and a global reputation for academic excellence,” says Jain. “This combination of academic prestige and real-world impact made it the ideal choice for my further studies. As I delved deeper, reading alumni reviews and researching the University of Birmingham, I found overwhelmingly positive impressions, solidifying my decision.”

A warm welcome awaits

Aside from its renowned programmes and academics, the university boasts a vibrant campus life. Set amongst historic buildings, modern facilities, and greenery are some of the city’s best cultural attractions. They include the Barber Institute of Fine Art, Winterbourne House and Garden, Lapworth Museum and more.

There’s no shortage of things to see, do and wonder at – within and beyond campus. The University of Birmingham is nestled in the UK’s second-largest city, where diverse communities and vibrant culture co-exist. Its 125th Anniversary Scholarships make it easier for international students to reach for their dreams while experiencing being a part of a thriving city. Those who wish to pursue a master’s degree can be eligible for scholarships worth up to 4,000 pounds (US$4,926), while those who hail from India can receive up to 5,000 pounds (US$6157).
